The “Big Five” are the African elephant, the leopard, the Cape buffalo, the black or white rhinoceros and the lion. By the way: The term “Big Five” doesn’t refer to the actual size of the animals, but to the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot.

The black rhinoceros is a critically endangered species, while the white rhinoceros is actually not white at all. The name derives from the Dutch word “whyt” (“wide”) and refers to the wide mouth of the animal. The lion is classified as a vulnerable species, while the white rhinoceros and the leopard are classified as near threatened.
